Description: On March 2, 1987, Delta Airlines inaugurated round trip service to Asia. Its inaugural flight to Tokyo originated in Atlanta and made a scheduled stop and crew change in Portland. A Lockheed L-1011 was utilized for the inaugural. Authorization to serve this route was granted as part of the United States-Japan Gateway Case, decided on September 19, 1986, by the U.S. Department of Transportation. Delta Airlines had filed an application to serve this route more than a year earlier when the United States and Japan entered into a Memorandum of Understanding allowing the United States to select three new routes to Japan. This cover was carried on the inaugural Delta Airlines flight from the Atlanta, Georgia Airport Mail Facility to Tokyo, Japan (where it was backstamped) and is listed in The American Air Mail Catalogue as DL-F72f.
