Description: This is a rare advertising handbill (flyer) promoting the Original London production of the TOM EYEN play "WOMEN BEHIND BARS" at the Whitehall Theatre in London. (The Original Off-Broadway production opened May 1st, 1975 at the Astor Place Theatre in New York City and closed after 54 performances. The London production began previews on June 13th, 1977 and officially opened June 22nd, 1977 for a brief run.) ..... A camp spoof of the 1950's exploitation films produced by Universal, Warner's and Republic Pictures, the black comedy is set in the Women's House of Detention in Greenwich Village. Among the range of social and psychological types imprisoned within its walls are an innocent young woman (framed by her husband on a charge of armed robbery), who is brutalized, betrayed and sexually assaulted throughout her eight years of incarceration, a chain-smoking, gum-snapping street-wise tough girl, and a delicate Southern belle reminiscent of Tennessee Williams' "Blanche DuBois". Lording over all is the sadistic matron and her tough-as-nails sidekick. The play starred DIVINE as the "Matron" and FIONA RICHMOND as "Mary-Eleanor" and the cast included SWEET WILLIAM, JENNIFER GRANVILLE, SALLY SAGOE, RUBY BUCHANAN, DEBBIE ARNOLD, ZOE GONARD, ANNIE LAMBERT, MAVOURNEEN BRYCELAND and ANDY PANTELIDOU ..... CREDITS: Book by TOM EYEN ("Dreamgirls", "The Dirtiest Show in Town", "Women Behind Bars" and the Off-Off-Broadway productions "Miss Nefertiti Regrets" and "Cinderella Revisited", both starring Bette Midler in 1965); Title Song written by TOM EYEN; Sets designed by STURGIS WARNER; Directed by RON LINK; Produced by DEBBIE RAYMOND and FIONA RICHMOND ..... DETAILS: Advertising handbills (heralds) were distributed or inserted into the playbills of other productions to help generate ticket sales for upcoming shows and events. This single page, two-sided handbill measures 5 1/2" X 8 1/2" inches and includes wonderful graphics, production credits and excerpts from two reviews on the front and excerpts from three additional New York reviews, performance dates and times on the backside ..... CONDITION: With the exception of heavy creasing on the left side, this rare handbill is in excellent condition and will make a wonderful addition to the collection of any theatre aficionado or historian. This item will be carefully packaged in a protective, carded sleeve and backed by stiff cardboard.
