Smart Reader enables individuals with low vision to retain the joys of reading by listening along or viewing with an attached monitor in color, enhanced high-contrast positive or negative modes.” It will be advantageous for anyone considering purchasing the Smart Reader to be broadly familiar with this or similar devices. It is portable, but it is substantial, meaning it weighs about 10 pounds. It’s operation is simple or remarkably broad and complex depending upon one’s attitude about technology. The included “Quick Start” pamphlet will have the device reading quite quickly after each part of the system is connected and powered (see images). The latter pages of the “User Manual” are significantly more complex as it explains each of the several ways in which the device can be used including; changing presentation on the Monitor, adjusting font appearance and size and saving documents. The Manual does not indicate how much storage space for saving documents, but a call to Enhanced Vision’s Tech Support confirmed that the USB ports on the back of the Reader can be used for Flash Drive storage (see images). The Users Manual is dated 2014. It is no longer made by Enhanced Vision. Nonetheless, it is fully functioning. All if its necessary components fit securely into specific spaces in the foam packaging built into the sturdy case (see images). Thee 13 Inch Monitor slides into a soft cloth bag which fits securely atop the foam (see images). Everything is secured with wide, Velcro-closure straps (see images). All sides of the Case are each foam filled. The front flap is secured with a substantial zipper with a metal pull. Each of its elements work properly; Monitor, Reader and Control Console (see images). The Reader’s voice is clear and adjustable for volume. We did not attempt to learn how to personalize the device nor to learn any of its numerous uses, choosing instead to use only the Basic functions. Removing the lower portion of the Control Console activates the more complex operations. There will be a learning curve associated with use of the Reader, but the Quick Start Guide allows swift use of its basic functions.
