FRANCIS GEORGE SCOTT & THE SCOTTISH RENAISSANCE-Maurice Lindsay

Description: This is FRANCIS GEORGE SCOTT & THE SCOTTISH RENAISSANCE. This 233 page hardback by Maurice Lindsay was published in 1980. From the DJ we read, "This is the first study of the Scottish composer, Francis George Scott. Apart from dealing with the various phases of his achievement as a songwriter, his biography and an assessment of his achievement in relation to the European musical climate of the period in which he was writing, the book considers his relationship with the Scottish literary renaissance. The Hawick-born composer, Francis George Scott (1880-1958), has in the past been the subject of much misunderstanding-a great deal of it engendered by enthusiastic over-support by people without musical training, or by well-known eccentrics-and his achievement as a song-writer has been overlooked. During his lifetime, five volumes of his Scottish Lyrics were published, a volume of Seven Baritone Songs, a large collection of Thirty-Five Scottish Lyrics and several part songs. As a young composer he reacted enthusiastically to Schonberg's theories contained in Harmonielehr, as well as to the work of Bartok, particularly in relation to Hungarian folk songs. Scott's absorption of modern techniques is reflected in some of his remarkable settings of the lyrics of his old friend and former English pupil, Hugh MacDonald. The year 1980 marked the centenary of Scott's birth and this assessment by the Scots writer and critic Maurice Lindsay will be welcomed by musicologists and students of literature-not only in Scotland but further afield as appreciation grows of the wide ranging significance of his talent."
