Description: Francisco Javier de Lizana y Beaumont (MEXICO) - DOCUMENT SIGNED 22/10/1810 The Document speaks...several instructions to the church to present the office before the sides, his designation as viceroy of Spainthe signature1810 Exhortation of the Hon. Mr. Archbishop of Mexico, Dr. Don Francisco Javier de Lizana y Beaumont, to the inhabitants of his diocese, so that they do not help Mr. Hidalgo in the revolution. September 24, 1810Don Francisco Javier de Lizana y Beaumont, by the grace of God and the Holy Apostolic See, Archbishop of Mexico, Knight Grand Cross of the Royal and Distinguished Spanish Order of Carlos III, of the Council of His Majesty, etc. My beloved clergy, my docile sheep and all of you who glory in the Christian name in this kingdom so happy and singularly favored with the paternal providence of our great God: If the feelings of the soul could be explained by the tongue, this would be the happy moment in which I could declare the martyrdom that oppresses me when I hear that your own brothers prepare their swift feet, according to the expression of David,1 to shed your blood, not knowing the unhappiness into which they will rush for not following the paths of peace. Help with vows and supplications the shepherd who loves you so much, as Saint Lean Papa asked his sheep on a similar occasion,2 so that the spirit of grace may not lack from me, nor from you the unity that closes the faithful in bond of peace, according to the apostle's doctrine.3 The Lord loves peace so much that he did not want to be born until the whole world was in it. This is the glorious name that Isaiah 4 gives him, and thus we see that in that sermon that Jesus Christ himself delivered on the mountain, he calls only the peaceful children of God.5 This was the rich inheritance that he left to the apostles when he said goodbye to them, and in that prayer that he made to the Father, he not only asked that he keep them in peace, but also that he make them one, as the son and the father are; and since you are called in the same hope of vocation, why should you not have the same spirit and sentiments of peace? Then you would indeed be my joy and my crown, because I would see in you an idea of that happy state of the primitive Church, in which all the multitude of the faithful were one heart and one soul.6 Far from you any party spirit. No one says I belong to Pablo, I belong to Apollo, I belong to Pedro; Christ is not divided.7 Congratulations, geniuses, opinions, and luck and fortune may be different: all this must be forgotten when it comes to your spiritual and temporal good. This is the whole background of our religion; this is the spirit of Christ, and he who does not have it is not his, says Paul,8 but the devil's. So, my children, my efforts for your eternal and temporal good and the confidence in your docility excite my zeal, today more than ever, to free you from the disasters that threaten you. What malevolent spirit, what infernal fury wants to move the quiet dwellings of the neighboring towns, perhaps with the fanatical and daring thought of approaching us, without knowing that he would come looking for his tomb? Perhaps because divine mercy wants to pity so many unhappy people exhausted by scarcity, does the devil prepare poison for the simple inhabitants right there? Such seems his hidden design. And if Divine Providence wants to give us a new testimony of protection, let us congratulate ourselves, giving it the most sincere thanks; but if our ingratitude does not recognize his beneficent hand, let us fear his just indignation. Yes, beloved inhabitants, whether you are from my diocese or from any other; I cannot do without warning you of the risk that your souls are running and the ruin that threatens your people if you do not close your ears to the tumultuous voice that has risen these days in the towns of Dolores and San Miguel el Grande and has spread to the the city of Queretaro. Some wayward people, among whom I hear with pain in my soul the name of a priest, worthy of compassion and living by his bad example, seem to be the main supporters of rebellion. Tell me, tell me, poor deceived by the evil spirit, you who used to look like such a brilliant star because of your science, how have you fallen like another Luzbel because of your pride? Miserable! Do not wait for my Angels (that is what the Scripture calls the priests) to go after you, like that multitude that the head angel of the apostates dragged in heaven; everyone will fight with the Chief of the Ecclesiastical Militia, and your name will not be heard again in this kingdom of God except for eternal anathemas. Blessed be the Lord who has consoled me with the happiness that up to now none of my clergy has sullied good opinion, and I hope he will contribute as up to now to the preservation of public peace. But since at the head of the insurgents there is a minister of Jesus Christ (I would rather say of Satan), advocating the hatred and extermination of his brothers and insubordination to legitimate power, I cannot help telling you that such a project is not and cannot be who is called a Christian. It is contrary to the law and doctrine of Jesus Christ; and if observing what he himself commands us about charity with our
