The related exhibition included several pieces by artist Paul Cadmus. This copy is signed by Cadmus in fine black ink on the inside title page. The book is from the personal library estate of Truman Capote with Capote's library stamp below Cadmus's signature. Cadmus and Capote were friends, with Cadmus remembering Capote at an outdoor café in Venice shortly after the war: "Truman lifted his cape up and down, up and down, and said, 'Come to Taormina! Come to Taormina!'" Cadmus recalled. The painter took Capote's advice and met him at the Italian resort. One day, Capote returned from the post office with the mail. "'I bring tidings of disaster!' he shouted. 'Tennessee's play is a great success!' I always liked Truman," said Cadmus. "He didn't give a damn what people thought of his voice or anything else. Brave little thing." About Paul Cadmus Paul Cadmus [b. 1904, New York; d.1999, Weston, Connecticut, USA] was a figurative painter who came to national attention as a result of the US Navy’s confiscation of his 1934 painting The Fleet’s In! Though his work of the late 1940s and 1950s was somewhat eclipsed by the rise of Abstract Expressionism, he enjoyed a loyal collecting base [including Cole Porter, Lincoln Kirstein and, later, Malcolm Forbes] throughout his long career. In the 1970s, he was reclaimed by the gay press as a pioneering figure whose homoerotic art had cleared the way for Tom of Finland and Robert Mapplethorpe, among many others. Cadmus continued to make art, including numerous nude sketches of his lover Jon Andersson, until his death a few days shy of his ninety-fifth birthday. About Truman Capote Truman Capote [b. 1924, New Orleans, Louisiana; d. 1984, Los Angeles, California, USA] was a renowned American author whose literary career took off with the publication of Other Voices, Other Rooms in 1948. Capote gained further acclaim for works such as Breakfast at Tiffany’s and In Cold Blood, which established him as a master of both fiction and true crime writing. Though his later years were marred by personal struggles and the shifting literary landscape, his works remained influential, attracting a dedicated readership. In the 1970s, Capote became a fixture in the celebrity circuit, his presence in the media often overshadowing his literary output. Despite this, he continued to write, leaving behind unfinished manuscripts and essays. Today, Capote is celebrated not only for his literary achievements but also for his sharp wit and complex persona, with his influence felt in both literary and popular culture.
