Description: a young Briton named Roger Hawkshaw who becomes shipwrecked off the east coast of Mexico a few years before Cortés’ first incursion into the very heart of that country. Befriended by tribes of indigenous natives, Roger lives with them, learns their languages, and earns their respect as a formidable warrior. Despite this, his six-foot stature makes him stand out among the diminutive natives; a physical feature that causes some problems along the way, when he tries to pass himself off as an Indian. Eventually he develops an emotional attachment to a beautiful native princess; and a close friendship with the now famous Malinche – who later on became Cortés’ mistress and a crucial component in his introduction to and war with the Aztecs. Today Malinche, or Doña Marina as Cortés preferred to call her, is a highly esteemed figure in Mexican history. One day finding himself close to the Spanish camp, Roger decides to join them and – somehow – return to England. But Spain and England being at war the Spanish would deem him an enemy. So, once in Cortés camp he declares himself a Spaniard who’d been shipwrecked off the Mexican coast as a child, raised by Indians and has forgotten his native Spanish – which he soon learns with the conquistadores. What follows is an accurate depiction of a long and bloody conflict wherein thousands died and an ancient civilization crumbled. The main reason being that by 1519 the Aztecs were despised by their conquered neighbors; whom they oppressed. Thus they formed pacts with the Spaniards. Had it not been for the indigenous allies the conquest would not have been possible.
