Description: For those who are true foodies, the name of Susan Costner should ring a bell. For the rest, I will try to explain why this book is a treasure. Susan Costner, with her partner, Devon Fredericks, opened a small food shop in Sagaponack, Long Island back around the 1980s. That shop quickly became the food purveyor of choice among the wealthy and gourmet crowd of LI. It was called The Loaves and Fishes Susan and Devon are as unique as their foods. And in her new book, Gifts of Food, Ms. Costner proves her worth. The chosen gifts are divided by the four seasons. Perfect. Each season has product that is specific to the time of the year, and she wanted her cookbook to reflect that. She is meticulous in her directions, and I have made several of her recipes, and each one was right on the money. Each season is well represented; but winter is replete with aromatic recipes From all the usual traditional cookies, to special cakes, and special recipes perfect for gift giving, Ms. Costner delivers. I remember one year, I emphasized her spice mixtures in the gifts.. Indian, French, Italian, and even Chinese. It was a wonderful hit with all my recipients. I got calls all year long for recipes. Prefer to give something with a bit of a kick? This book abounds in homemade cordials. Whatever you may have the craving to do, I would bet you could find it in here. Yes, it is an ex-library book, and it is not perfect. But is is wonderful in its selection of gifts to give. Incluiding ones you intend to "gift" to yourself!
