Stamp is #807 with slogan cancel: "Buy U.S. Savings Bonds Ask Your Postmaster". - The letters relate to a situation that Mrs. Burling is attempting to assist in expediting between U.S. Senator Mead (NY) and a Mrs. Newman; specifically, it seems, assisting family members in coming to the U.S. from a Russian-controlled area in Europe. The first letter is undated. The second letter, written one day before the postmark, references the first letter. - Along with the cover and letters, a mint never hinged Gold Star Mothers 3c stamp (#969) is included. - About Mathilda Burling: Both colorful and contentious, a founder of the Gold Star Mother movement, she was influential in passage of legislation to provide funding for trips by Gold Star Mothers to Europe to visit the graves of lost sons (see scan of Time Magazine article). Not without controversy, she was often criticized for her manner and methods. Although AGSMWW was a smaller, rival organization to the American Gold Star Mothers (AGSM), as its President, Burling was a vigorous promoter. In 1931, Burling was dropped from AGSM membership for "disloyalty" while still owing two years' back dues. She remained active in Gold Star Mothers activities for the remainder of her life (see scanned photos).
