John Gray Foster graduated from the Military Academy at West Point, graduating in 1846. He served in the Mexican War, and was severely wounded. After the war he taught engineering at West Point. At the start of the Civil War he was working as an engineering in charge of fortifications in Charleston Harbor. He was one of 9 officers WHO WERE ISOLATED ON FT. SUMPTER WITH MAJ. ROBERT ANDERSON AND WHO LIVED THROUGH THE FAMOUS 33 HOUR BOMBARDMENT ENDING ON APRIL 13, 1861 BY THE CONFEDERATES PRIOR TO SURRENDER.In Oct. 1861 he was made Bvt Brig. General under Ambrose Burnside. In early 1862 he participated in Burnside's Expedition. Also assisted in the capture of Roanoke Island. Confederate Fort Bartow on Roanoke was renamed Ft. Foster in his honor!! Also provided excellent service in the capture of Newbern, N.C. Promoted Maj. Gen. of Vols. on July 18, 1862 and later commanded the Dept. of Va. and N. Carolina. He was seriously wounded when his horse fell, but later commanded the Dept. of the South. HE SUPPORTED SHERMAN IN HIS MARCH TO THE SEA BY MAKING DIVERSIONS AND DEMONSTRATIONS. He finished the war in 1865 as Maj. Gen. for Gallant & Meritorious Service during the Rebellion.
