Von Schmidt, a member of the artist colony that included Wyeth, Cornwell, Rockwell, and Leyendecker, was famous for his Western paintings and magazine illustrations, his painting commissioned by John Ford for the film 'Fort Apache', and his sixty illustrations for Cather's deluxe edition of DEATH COMES TO THE ARCHBISHOP. The artist, who worked as a young cowhand and who's guardian was a 49er, garnered the first gold medal award in the National Cowboy Hall of Fame in 1968.
