The Arbuthnot's were a prominent Fifth Avenue Family in Pittsburgh: financially well-situated, hard-working, and benevolent to their neighbors and community at large. Thomas authored three books, all best-sellers: "African Hunt", "Grand Safari", both humorous and insightful big game hunting accounts of the 1920s, and "Heroes of Peace". Interestingly, "African Hunt" is a still sought-after classic; the book describes Arbuthnot's safari excursion, the longest expedition attempt down the Nile River at the time of publication; made into a documentary feature, the film premiered by Universal Studios in 1929. Being raised on "Millionaire's Row" in a comfortably well-off family did not seem to affect Thomas in the areas of egotism nor extravagance. His defining life-path remained altruistic and he dedicated himself to those less fortunate. A graduate of both Yale (1894) and Columbia University, New York (1898), Thomas advanced into a distinguished medical career after interning at the Free Hospital for Consumptives. Thomas became a professor emeritus and Dean of the Pittsburgh School of Medicine from 1908-1918. Taking no pay for the position, Arbuthnot revamped physician qualifications and standards to improve patient care. The gilt still glitters but has wear or foxing on it. The slipcase is in acceptable condition. It has protected the book over the years but the slipcase in not very good shape presently. The letter is in very good condition. Except for the spotting here and there of foxing on outside, the book is in very nice shape.
