Description: INCREDIBLE! Ca. 1770-1840 NATIVE AMERICAN WAR TOMAHAWK--VICIOUS SPIKE Totally original (including the haft), this rare hawk had one purpose: to kill. It’s 7 1/2 inch downward curving spike was designed by the blacksmith (see his mark “F” in a circle of dots on both sides of the blade) to follow the downward motion of the warrior’s striking arm and do lethal damage to its victim. The teardrop eye which Baldwin uses as a criterion for dating, shows its age as expected. The hardwood (oak?) haft has a number of wormholes and no sign of ever having been a replacement. Definitely the original. The length of the hawk’s head from tip of spike to bit is: 12 inches. The length from the bottom of the haft to the top of the eye is 18 1/2 inches. The bit is 3 1/4 inches. Condition: Rust over patinated surface. No repairs or restoration. Minor loss to small area just before tip of spike (see photo). GUARANTEED AS DESCRIBED.
