In late 1914, after finishing college, J. Paul Getty had entered into his father's business, Minnehoma. Buying and selling leases for Minnehomas' Tulsa office. In 1915 he decided to be an independent operator. For $500 he purchased a half interest in an oil lease on the Nancy Taylor allotment northwest of Haskell, Oklahoma. Virtually penniless, in order to raise the cost of drilling he formed Lorena Oil Company and found partners. In January 1916 drilling commenced, with Getty working alongside the crew. A month later the well came in at seven hundred barrels a day. On February 12 he sold his share of the lease for forty thousand dollars, turning a personal net profit of eleven thousand dollars. He continued his independent operations in Oklahoma and by mid-1916 had made a million dollars. Although J. Paul Getty moved out of state shortly thereafter, his investments and his companies continued to play a significant role in Oklahoma Industry. See Spartan Aviation in Tulsa.
