Description: For your consideration, an authentic Byzantine coin pendant with a sterling silver bail and the setting made from a United States silver half dollar. In the 10th century during the Byzantine empire (395-1453AD), emperors abandoned the tradition of placing their own portrait on coins, making way instead for a portrait of Jesus Christ. This change communicated the religious and subservient role that the emperor had taken on. The obverse of this specimen features the bust of Christ which emerges from a cross surrounded by a halo. The reverse features the four line legend which translates to “Jesus Christ King of Kings” The coin itself is worn due to age. But the patina is beautiful and its significance is timeless.
