Description: A poetic, beautifully impressionist work, the subject a chilly, gray day in central Paris, adults and children in a park setting, likely the Tuileries gardens, the children dipping their hands in the still-unfrozen fountain basin, as pigeons dance in the powdery snow at lower left around the classic little wood and metal chairs typically found in Paris parks. The 13" by 16 1/2" oil on canvas (18" by 21 1/2" framed) is signed at lower right by the well-known, popular French impressionist artist JULES RENE HERVE (1887-1981). The artist, who worked his entire career in the tradition of French Impressionism, pointedly ignoring modernism, has created here a beautiful work which captures the special light of a gray day in Paris, sure to delight any Francophile. Herve was born in eastern France, showed early talent, and was schooled in Paris, first exhibiting in 1910, from which time he was a regular Salon exhibitor. The artist taught until roughly 1943. In later years he became a favored artist by the likes of Wally Findlay Galleries, who featured his works and helped him become more known in the United States. Paintings have brought above $20,000 at major auctions. Herve is known today for his beautiful works featuring familiar scenes of Paris and the French countryside, and genre. This painting is in excellent, wall-ready condition. This is one of three works I acquired from one local Los Angeles westside estate. Apparently the pieces came from a longtime Carmel gallery, "Galerie de France" as paperwork therefrom accompanied several of the works. One Dina Marine was the owner, "in Carmel since 1952" stated on the letterhead. This frame still bears the "30th Anniversary" red label of that gallery, dating this purchase to about 1982, shortly after the artist's death.
