On June 19th, 1865, Federal troops arrived in Galveston Texas bringing with them the news that all formerly enslaved people are now free. Although the news came more than two years after Abraham Lincoln signed the emancipation proclamation, celebrations occurred all across the state of Texas and beyond. Only one year later on June 19th, 1866, the first official Juneteenth celebrations took place in Texas, and eventually, celebrations began being held in other states as well.
