Founded in 1888 by Dr. Theodore Corson Wheaton, it became a mainstay of the economy of southern New Jersey, which gained a reputation as the center of commercial glass manufacturing in the United States. The company was run by the Wheaton family for nearly its entire existence, and its height it had 41 factories throughout the United States and subsidiaries in 20 other countries. Many of its vintage products continue to be collectors items. Formerly a subsidiary of Alcan Packaging as Wheaton Science Products, it was taken private in November 2006, and is once again known as Wheaton Industries. The company was founded by Theodore C. Wheaton, a pharmacist and businessman, who in 1883 settled in Millville, in Cumberland County, New Jersey, southeast of Philadelphia. Southern New Jersey had by that time emerged as the center of U.S. glass manufacturing because of the prevalence of natural resources such as wood, sand, and silica. Wheaton became particularly interested in the manufacture of pharmaceutical glassware, and in 1888 he established a small factory on the outskirts of Millville to manufacture his own bottles. The company became known as the T. C. Wheaton Co. Anticipating future growth of the company, Wheaton purchased 25 square blocks in Millville in an area bounded by Third Street, Wheaton Avenue and north to a railroad siding which allowed the company to expand over the following decades. Wheaton's son, Frank H. Wheaton, Sr., entered the company in 1889. Two years later, the company suffered a financial setback when T. C. Wheaton entered into a bad business venture that left the company ten years to pay off. ABOUT THE CHEMICAL: The primary application of ammonium chloride is as a nitrogen source in fertilizers (such as chloroammonium phosphate). The main crops fertilized in this fashion are rice and wheat in Asia. Ammonium chloride was used in pyrotechnics in the 18th century but was superseded by safer and less hygroscopic chemicals (the chemical enhanced the green and blue colors from copper ions in the flame). Ammonium chloride is used as a flux in preparing metals to be tin coated, galvanized or soldered. It is sold in blocks at hardware stores (for use in cleaning the tips of soldering irons) and it can also be included in solder as flux. Ammonium chloride is used as an expectorant in cough medicine. Ammonium chloride, under the name sal ammoniac or salmiak is used as food additive working as a yeast nutrient in breadmaking and as an acidifier. It is a feed supplement for cattle and an ingredient in nutritive media for yeasts and many microorganisms. Ammonium chloride is used to spice up dark sweets called salty liquorice, in baking to give cookies a very crisp texture, and in liquor for flavoring. In Iran, Tajikistan, India, Pakistan and Arab countries it is called "Noshader" and is used to improve the crispness of snacks such as samosas and jalebi. Around the turn of the 20th century, ammonium chloride was used in aqueous solution as the electrolyte in Leclanché cells that found a commercial use as the "local battery" in subscribers' telephone installations. Those cells later evolved into zinc–carbon batteries still using ammonium chloride as electrolyte. SHIPPING COST꞉ Your shipping cost is calculated when checking out.
