Lampblack is the Carbon soot deposited from incomplete burning of liquid hydrocarbons, like parading wax or oil. Because it is so incredibly fine, a small amount covers a large area, giving an intense black color. It forms the basis of the best traditional black inks and is used from shoe polish to blackening gun sights and barrels and even in pyrotechnics. For use as a watercolor, lamp black was mixed with glue, prepared in sticks and sold as India or Indian ink. Lamp black was one of the major black pigment in early American house paintings. Safety and toxicity Lamp black is non toxic Though it is not considered to be toxic, do not ingest, inhale and avoid prolong skin contact. This stuff is wicked hard getting it off of your skin. Call it a semi-permanent tattoo that will go away after a few weeks. So wear gloves when handling and be clean and safe with it. You definitely want to use this on things that you don't care about as it will not come off of them.
