Select Guide Rating About the Author Andrea Saltzman is an attorney in California, specializing in the representation of public agencies in appellate matters. She began her legal career in 1973, working in poverty law and representing welfare recipients, public housing residents, juveniles, and the mentally ill, among others. From 1984 to 1989 she was a lecturer at the School of Social Work at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, teaching the mandatory course on law for M.S.W. students. She has also taught law as an adjunct professor at the University of California Berkeley School of Law and at the University of Michigan School of Law. She has a B.A. from Bryn Mawr College and an M.A (Sociology) and J.D. from the University of California at Berkeley. David M. Furman is an experienced appellate judge serving on the Colorado Court of Appeals and a former magistrate of the Denver Juvenile and District Courts. Judge Furman has presided over a broad range of cases and has authored published and non-published appellate opinions that influence social work practice. Prior to his appointment to the bench, he had extensive litigation experience in child welfare and criminal law cases, including serving as a Deputy Public Defender in the appellate division of the Colorado Public Defender's Office. He taught law and policy courses at Denver University's Graduate School of Social Work and at Colorado Christian University, and currently provides multidisciplinary training to persons who work in the child welfare field, including judicial officers, city and county attorneys, social workers, and respondent parent counsel. Judge Furman serves on the Executive Committee of the Colorado Court Improvement Program (CIP) and Supreme Court Standing Committee on Family Issues. He received a Governor's Citation for his work on a state task force on child welfare. He holds a B.A. degree in psychology and education from Wheaton College, and J.D. and M.S.W. degrees from the University of Denver. In 2011, the University of Denver Graduate School of Social Work recognized him as one of the top 50 most influential graduates. Kathleen Ohman earned B.S., M.S.W, and Ph.D. degrees at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She was a member of the faculty there before moving to the University of Denver in 1988. At the University of Denver she was a professor in the Graduate School of Social Work, where she taught classes in social welfare policy, research methods, and the legal aspects of social work practice and held an array of administrative positions. She retired in December 2013 but remains active in causes related to social and economic justice.
