Description: This is Mac Kinlay Kantor's early novel on the Civil War. This is LONG REMEMBER. This 411 page hardback was published in 1934 and is NOT A MODERN REPRINT. The central character is Dan Bale who was born in Gettysburg but moved west as a young man to Minnesota. As the story opens it is three weeks before the battle and Bale has returned to Gettysburg for his grandfather's funeral. His parents had died when he was young and his grandfather had raised him and he now inherited a considerable estate including a house on the outskirts of the town. While no coward, he has a philosophical antipathy towards the war and has avoided involvement. The romance unfolds soon after his arrival as he meets a childhood friend, Tyler Fanning, who is a captain in the Union army and his beautiful wife Irene. Tyler is away on duty for most of the novel and Dan and Irene fall madly in love and are both tormented by guilt. While this is happening the author skillfully paints the scene of a small northern town offering a peaceful life with the looming dark presence of the war. Its not like today with our instant news. It's difficult to know anything for certain and what news they get is usually a week or more old. They are aware that Lee has invaded the North and hear rumors that the rebel army is in Pennsylvania. Still is a shock to all when the two armies, north and south, finally collide at their town which happens at about halfway through the book. The story of the battle is told entirely from the perspective of Bale and Irene who are well educated but have little understanding of the military. That Kantor is a gifted writer is clear from the beginning but he adopted a technique to describe the battle that I did not enjoy. Of course to those caught in it, a battle is immensely chaotic and confusing especially more so to the civilians. Great Civil War fiction in the line of Jeff Sharra. Book is in acceptable condition. Clean unmarked very lightly aged pages. Some light tanned places on inside page adjacent to front board and inside back board. Tearing at binding on inside front and back boards; some fabric showing and some looseness but holding well. Some scarring on boards, tearing on sides of spine and two scarred holes and rubbed area in spine. Spine has been reglued. STILL a great old read!!
