Description: Born in 1923, Loretta Cain was a prominent New Mexico artist. She painted for nearly 70 years until she became blind. She also owned an art gallery in the 1960s and 1970s. In 1995, Cain moved to Silver City and opened another art gallery. Cain painted in the Impressionist style and used many colors in her works. Her subject matter was often landscapes and scenes of everyday life in New Mexico. This large original work of art is painted on plywood hard board and is very heavy. Here, Cain has set the scene of a town festival with a band playing in a gazebo and people dancing outside. In the foreground are the backs of chairs, as though the viewers of this painting are present at the festival, seated and watching the entertainment. The people in this picture are wearing western style clothing which hints that this is likely an image of life in rural New Mexico. The artist has used a multitude of bright colors which capture the cheerfulness of this festive event.
