Description: Original lithograph “I have achieved a great deal to achieve nothing in the end” by Curtis Hooper and Sarah Churchill Curtis Hooper (1945 Barnsley, England – 2020 Brantford, Ontario) was a renowned English stockbroker-turned-artist from London known for creating works of art, from fine portraiture to abstracts. He had been commissioned to create artworks of prominent persons around the world, most prominently HRH Queen Elizabeth II, who posed for Curtis at Buckingham Palace, and Sir Winston Churchill, whose wife and daughters he collaborated with to create a series of artworks about Sir Winston’s life and philosophies. Working in tandem with Sarah Churchill, daughter of Sir Winston Churchill, and Graphic House Publishing in New Jersey, Hooper, a longtime admirer of the former prime minister, embarked on creating a series of limited-edition embossed offset print lithographs in the late 1960s. He titled the series “A Visual Philosophy of Sir Winston Churchill,” and the series has become quite famous. The series covers Churchill’s early childhood all the way through his second term as prime minister in the 1950s. Sarah hand-signed the entire collection of prints, which numbered in the thousands. The exact number is indeterminate: although each was technically limited to 400, fewer were actually produced. Sarah always signed and numbered each to ensure completion and authenticity, but this was not her only personal touch to the series. “Curtis noticed, as he got to know Sarah, that she would take small pieces of tracing paper and affectionately trace simple outlines of family photos, including her father.” Inspired, Hooper decided to include one of Sarah’s tracing in intaglio alongside both signatures and the embossment of the quotation on which each print was based. In producing the series, a collection of twenty-eight original pieces, each work made from three separate aluminum lithograph plates, the larger one being Hooper’s drawing, the other two the reverse embossings of 1) Churchill’s coat of arms and 2) Sarah’s tracing with the appropriate quotation to the theme of the individual piece. The full embossed quote adjacent to Sarah’s drawing of an elderly Winston sitting by his pond at his home, Chartwell, is “I have achieved a great deal to have achieved nothing in the end.” This is the last of the 28 different lithographs in the series and is numbered 1/400. Size of the lithograph is approximately 35”T X 23”W. It is in exceptional condition with only minor/light foxing .
