Max Rockatansky (Mel Gibson), a skilled officer in the Main Force Patrol (MFP), pursues the fugitive Crawford "Nightrider" Montizano, who crashes and dies in a fiery wreck after evading the police. Nightrider's gang, led by the sadistic Toecutter (Hugh Keays-Bryne), terrorizes a small town, and Max and his partner, Goose (Steve Bisley), arrest Johnny the Boy (Tim Burns), but he is released due to a lack of witnesses. Enraged, Goose is later killed when Johnny sabotages his motorcycle and sets him on fire. Max, disillusioned by the police force, plans to quit. On holiday, his wife Jessie and son are attacked and killed by Toecutter’s gang. Max, consumed by rage, returns to hunt them down, killing several gang members, including Bubba and Toecutter. Max finally captures Johnny, handcuffs him to a wreck, and sets a time-delay fuse with a choice: saw through his handcuffs (10 minutes) or ankle (5 minutes). As Max drives away, the car explodes, and Johnny’s fate is left unknown. Max drives into the outback, emotionless.
