My name is Chad and I own the largest private collection of handmade Maud Lewis silk-screened prints by Bill Ferguson from 1962-1982. I decided to create a website to sell some of my prints and explain more about their history and direct connection to Maud Lewis. Bill Ferguson discovered Maud Lewis in 1962, and was the only person to make arrangements with Maud and Everett and obtained the legal Copyrights to use her images to produce silk-screened reproductions. Each print is a 9 colour image, meaning 9 stencils were created and separated by colour. A highly skilled silk-screen artist would then paint on each stencil one at a time, waiting for each colour to dry before applying the next. The thick illustrations boards they are painted on, are also hand cut to size, and a spray is used to give it a finished look and added durability. These are as close to an original Maud Lewis painting as you can get, and very rarely comes up at auction! This collection was purchased directly from the descendants of Bill Ferguson. A true piece of Canadian history! Please read more about the history in my website. Every print is much cheaper than galleries/auctions to ensure everyone has an opportunity to own a vintage print. Original description: "Deer in Winter" - In this scene, the two deer seem to be gazing with whimsical fascination at the village across the lake. One wonders if it reflects an inner longing for Maude and Everett to live in such a lovely settlement, in a house where she could have a proper studio and all the amenities of a real home. BACKGROUND ON BILL FERGUSON: William Ferguson was co-owner of Ten Mile House Gallery in Bedford, Nova Scotia, and a pioneer promoter of Maud Lewis's works during the 1960's. In the early 60's, Ferguson obtained the rights from Maud so that he could produce prints of her paintings, and provided Maud with royalties on the sale of those prints. It was his hope that the additional income would lend a higher degree of security to Maud and Everett's way of life. By 1965, Maud couldn't keep up with the demand for her paintings. Ferguson's high quality hand cut silk screen prints were a fine alternative. The prints were produced and sold for the next 30 years and have become collectible in their own right. Interestingly, there was a documentary on Maud done by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation in 1965 and Bill Ferguson is featured in that documentary discussing his reasoning behind the production of these prints. They are better than any modern Maud Lewis prints currently available anywhere. Will be shipped out next business day. Shows minor signs of age/imperfections. 100% guaranteed to be an authentic silk screen print by Bill Ferguson.
