MAYOR RICHARD VARICK - MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT SIGNED 04/17/1799 - HFSID 251514 RICHARD VARICK Richard Varick signed this bail document in a trespassing case as Mayor of New York in 1799. Manuscript signed "Richard Varick Mayor". White label at bottom of document. 1 page, 5¾x5¾, docketed on verso. April 17, 1799. In full: "Supreme Court Of the Terms of January in the Year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and ninety nine. - City and County of New York to wit. John Manor is delivered to bail upon the taking of his body to Wit to Isaac Titford of the Second Ward of the City of New York Merchant and John Does of the same place Grocer. - At the Suit of John Cook and Edward Blackford in a Plea of Trespass on the Case Damages $1200. Taken and acknowledged the 17th Day of April, before me. 1799." During the Revolutionary War, Varick (1753-1831, born in Hackensack, New Jersey) was Military Secretary to General Philip Schuyler. He was also Aide-de-Camp to General Benedict Arnold and was examined by a court of inquiry after Arnold's defection. Varick was completely exonerated. Varick then served as General George Washington's Recording Secretary. From 1791 to 1801, he was Mayor of New York City. In New York City, Varick Street, which named in his honor, runs in a north-south direction from Tribeca in lower Manhattan to Houston Street, where it becomes Seventh Avenue. Lightly toned, foxed, creased and bowed. Signature is light but legible. Show-through from verso touches manuscript handwriting but not signature. Missing bottom edges. Irregular edges.
