Description: This is a beautiful piece of Leland Blue Stone which is 150 year old slag glass from the iron smelting industry. This piece looks glassy dull purple on the outside but has a beautiful translucent purple and smoky gray color when you hold it up to a light.From 1870 to 1884 in the town of Leland Michigan, the Leland Lake Superior Iron Company had an iron smelter at the mouth of the river.During the smelting process in a huge furnace, raw iron ore was super heated to remove any natural impurities. When the impurities cooled, they produced a glass like slag. The slag was shipped out and dumped into the harbor as a waste product.The colors of Leland Blue stone vary between different shade of blue, green, gray, purple and sometimes white. Most are translucent and are very pretty when you shine a light through them.Leland Blue Stones are sought after by collectors and jewelry makers alike because of their relative rarity. Since Leland Blues can only be found in Leland Michigan it makes them quite unique and special around the World.Rock hounders, collectors and jewelry makers scour the beach to find pieces of Leland Blue Stone washed up by the waves.You can polish this by hand or in a rock tumbler.
