Description: 12 1/4 ounce all aluminum can from Schlitz... Governments have tried over and over again to accomplish their objectives using strange and obscure laws to manipulate the brewing industry. One of these laws gave us a most unique can in the State of New Mexico. The “price affirmation law”, enacted by the New Mexico Legislature in 1979, required that New Mexico wholesalers be cost-protected by making brewing companies give them as low a price as was offered to wholesalers in other states for the same product/container. Two brewers tried to circumvent the law by developing off-size beer containers. In September 1979, Joseph Schlitz Brewing Co. began selling beer in 12¼-ounce cans (362 ml vs. the standard 355 ml) or 16¼-ounce cans (481 ml vs. the standard 473 ml) for their brands including Schlitz and Old Milwaukee. The extra quarter ounce was hardly noticeable to consumers, but the extra volume was clearly shown on the cans in ounces or ml. In March 1980, Anheuser Busch went smaller and announced that its unique New Mexico can would hold 10 ounces instead of 12. They promised that a six-pack of the smaller cans would sell for 20 cents less per pack. Joseph Finnigan, spokesman for Anheuser Busch in St. Louis, said Budweiser, Michelob, Michelob Light and Natural Light would be sold only in 10-ounce cans and bottles. “We just can’t do business in the conventional packages any more,” he said in an Albuquerque Journal article dated Saturday, March 1, 1980. New Mexico consumers were ok with the Schlitz decision to package a little bit more product into each can, but the Anheuser Busch smaller package was not at all well received. It’s hard to imagine that Budweiser could ever do anything to irritate its customer base! The odd sizes didn’t last long since a new bill in the New Mexico Legislature in 1981 required brewing companies to use container sizes in New Mexico that also are used in at least 25 percent of the other states. But the cans were around long enough to include both pull tabs and sta-tab tops. Seller will combine shipping! If you are interested in more than just this can, add all cans to your cart and request an invoice.
