Translated from the Spanish version by Gregory Rabassa. A strong copy with green boards in a striking dust jacket and mylar cover with the exclamation mark after “Latin America !” instead of the period, as is often found in later copies found of this title. All issue points for First Edition, 1st State include; $7.95 on front dust jacket flap with exclamation mark at end of first paragraph, stated first edition on copyright page, and no number line on last page of book. This copy is rare with a few listed as first state. He is considered one of the most significant authors of the 20th century and one of the best in the Spanish language. He was awarded the 1972 Neustadt International Prize for Literature and the 1972 Nobel Prize in Literature. [WIKI] Condition : hardcover is in very good condition with bright green cloth boards and clear spine lettering. The binding is tight and boxed without any markings. Internal pages clean and free of markings. There is slight foxing on top pages and slight fading on inner boards. It looks like the corners are slightly bumped and a slight curve to front board. No names, bookplates, remainders, or stamps. The dust jacket is in solid condition, showing a couple/few sizable chips to the lower front edge and top spine end. The jacket also shows modest edge rubbing with some short tears and creasing. The jacket is NOT price clipped and IS covered with a brodart cover. In my opinion, still is a strikingly attractive jacket, even with the flaws. See all pictures for clarification prior to purchasing. This comes from a private collection.
