Description: In production since the early ’30s, the D-28 remains an absolutely benchmark acoustic guitar. Like all high-end Martins, the D-28 was (and still is) built in the Martin factory in Nazareth, PA. HISTORY: Celebrating its 50th birthday, Serial #340207 was recently acquired from its original owner. A lifetime 'local' instrument, it was purchased brand new in 1974 from North Beach Music at 1435 Grant Ave in San Francisco. The owner played the guitar regularly for the next 25+ years while touring/performing semi-professionally throughout California. Featuring the D-28, in 1997 he recorded an album of all original music which received some airplay on CA radio stations. (An image of the Martin figures prominently on the cover). SOUND: Like certain fine wine, many believe that, after 50 years, premium guitars find their maximum potential sound-wise. Certainly #340207 has "opened up" beautifully offering great sustain, depth of sound, resonance and clarity. FEATURES: The guitar was assembled with and still wears its original Indian Rosewood back and sides, Sitka Spruce top, mahogany neck, ebony bridge and fingerboard and ivoroid binding. CONDITION: The guitar is overall in Very Good + condition. The neck is laser straight and the action is low. It still has its original Grover Rotomatic tuners. The finish is entirely original and shows some wear, checking and bruises consistent with its age and use. There is a little visible wear to the frets though is contained almost entirely along the b string on the 4 lower frets. There is a 3/4" fissure in the top though I could not feel on the inside of the guitar. The guitar comes with a relatively new contemporary hardshell case, also in very good condition. (Two Minor) ENHANCEMENTS: The original owner added a strap button to the body near the butt of the neck and an under-saddle pickup and tail strap button / input jack, all of which work well. (See photos) Of course, the D-28 has been the workhorse instrument for a veritable Who's Who of singer/songwriter music greats (incl Hank William, Elvis, Bob Dylan, John, Paul AND George, Neil Young, Jimmy Buffet, Joni Mitchell, Arlo AND Woody Guthrie, Joan Baez, David Crosby, etc., etc., etc., ... ) To me, this particular example has just the right amount of "mojo", balancing between colorful history, working premium instrument and cool vintage vibe. Hard to imagine how these well-preserved old Martins, especially the iconic D-28's, will not continue to appreciate over time. Best of all, #340207 plays and sounds great and is ready to service a new performer for the NEXT 50 years.
