Description: The vanilla orchid (Vanilla planifolia) is an orchid plant native to Mexico that now also grows in other subtropical regions, including Madagascar, the Caribbean, Hawaii, Indonesia, Réunion Island, Tahiti, and regions in Central America. The plant is a member of the orchidfamily (Orchidaceae), and is epiphytic, meaning it produces long vines that grow on trees for support. The orchid’s name translates to “small pod" in Spanish.Vanilla beans—the origin of a spice for flavoring dishes like cake and ice cream—are the fruit of the vanilla orchid plant. The Aztecs first harvested vanilla beans, using them as a food flavoring. Plants can grow up to 40ft tall in the right tropical climate. Plants do not tolerate cold or frost/freezing temperatures. Hardy in zones 9-10. Must Bring indoors to overwinter in colder climates. Does well as a houseplant. Young plants should always be kept well watered in the growing season, in a well draining soil or orchid soil mix. These vining plants would like some sort of trellis for support. Best with morning sun and afternoon shade first year then more sun can be given as it matures and establishes itself. Always make sure if in a pot, the pot has adequate drainage holes. For sale is one healthy plant 4-8” tall in a 2.5”x3.5” Pot.
