Possibly unique cabinet card of two adorable young girls, likely sisters, by Walter S. Bowman of Pendleton, OR. They are presumably Umatilla, Walla Walla, or Cayuse, from the nearby Umatilla Reservation The girl at left wears a shell necklace with a pendant and an Iroquoian beaded whimsy on her right wrist. Her toddler companion is also wearing a shell necklace and holds an unidentified object in her hands. I believe the girl at left, here age 5 or 6, may be the same girl who poses with her mother in another Bowman photo shown here: https://www.oldoregonphotos.com/mother-and-daughter-at-pendleton-c-1895.html The girl posing with her mother appears to be about 12 years old, and though her face has changed with age, several features seem to be in common with the photo offered here. Walter Scott Bowman, a prominent photographer of Pendleton, apprenticed to T. C. Ward starting in 1887 and purchased Ward's studio in 1890. He is most famous for his documentation of the Pendleton Round-Up over many years, but he also photographed people from the Umatilla Reservation, which is very close to Pendleton. Dimensions of card: 6.5 x 4.25 inches Condition is represented well by the scans. My scanner rendered the color of this print as slightly more pinkish than it is; the actual color is a more neutral brown. The surface of the print shows light to moderate wear that is mostly not apparent viewing straight-on. The vertical mark in the print extending upward from just to the left and above the head of the toddler—in the "sky" of the backdrop—is the result of very light abrasion from handling. There is a small loss of emulsion in the upper right corner. None of this detracts from the strong impact of the subject. I do not accept returns. I provide thorough descriptions and good photos.
