Description: This is an original signed painting, not a limited edition giclee. It was owned only by the artist's family.Alexander Volkov is a Russian American artist, born in Leningrad in 1960, who has lived and worked in New Jersey since 1990. He started painting with oil as a high school student, and in 1981 began exhibiting his work with the “Brotherhood of Experimental Arts”, a collective of underground art groups active in Leningrad at the time. Later, he joined a splinter group called “Ostrov” (“Island”) which united 30 artists who felt their work was neither socialist realism nor extreme avant garde. Alexander obtained a degree in Physics from Leningrad State University in 1986 that included study of the Northern Lights in Murmansk, a city above the Arctic Circle in northern Russia where, for over a month in winter, the sun never rises above the horizon and the landscape is shrouded in darkness. On the other side of the coin is the magical period of “white nights” spanning Leningrad’s summer solstice, where one can read a book outdoors at midnight. Perhaps it was this combination that inspired Alexander’s great sensitivity to the life and nature that surrounds him, and contributed to his obsession with the play of light and darkness that consistently finds its way into his paintings.
