Description: Paul Jacoulet Complete Set of Woodblock Prints Exhibition Catalog 2021 KaruizawaDescription(From the catalog) Paul Jacoulet : French Ukiyo-e artist who loved Karuizawa Greetings The highland town of Karuizawa, located at an altitude of 900 to 1,000 meters on the southern foot of Mt. Asama, is blessed with clear, rich nature and climate. Since it was discovered by the British missionary Alexander Croft Shaw in 1886 (Meiji 19), it has been loved by many foreigners, cultural figures, artists, and writers, and has developed a unique culture as a leading summer resort. Painter Paul Jacoulet, also known as the French ukiyo-e artist, was one of those who deeply loved Karuizawa. Paul Jacoulet was born in Paris in 1896 (Meiji 29). He came to Japan at the age of three due to his father's work, and lived his entire life in Japan until his death in Karuizawa, deeply loving its culture and climate. Jacoulet traveled all over Japan, to the southern islands of Micronesia and the Korean Peninsula, and interviewed the people who lived there. Using ukiyo-e woodblock print techniques from the Edo period, he produced intricate, colorful works that continue to fascinate people around the world. In 1944 (Showa 19) during the war, Jacoulet was evacuated to Karuizawa. He did not return to Tokyo after the war, but instead invited printers to Karuizawa, set up an atelier, and produced many works in Karuizawa. Jacoulet, who was also known as a butterfly collector, would walk through the forest with a butterfly net and deepen his connections with cultural figures, artists, and local people. Even today, you can hear stories of those days from residents of Karuizawa who knew Jacoulet. On the 60th anniversary of Jacoulet's death in Karuizawa, we will hold a special exhibition in Karuizawa, a place with which he is associated, to introduce the full scope of his artistic career in two periods, displaying all 162 of Jacoulet's multicolored woodblock prints. We are very pleased that all of his prints will be exhibited in one place for the first time in Japan, and that not only the residents of Karuizawa, but also many people from Japan and abroad will be able to see them. We hope that many people will enjoy the works and experience Jacoulet's artistic world. Finally, we would like to express our sincere gratitude to his family and all those involved for their tremendous cooperation in holding this special exhibition and publishing this book.
