If you recall, Robin's band of Merry Men were living in Sherwood Forest to escape from the cruel Prince John and his henchman the Sheriff of Nottingham. (Robin and his men helped the poor by taking from rich travelers, while they waited for the rightful king, King Richard the Lion-hearted, to return from the Crusades and oust Prince John.) You may recall the story of how the Sheriff of Nottingham (or maybe Prince John) hatched a plan to try to capture Robin Hood. They arranged for an archery tournament open to anyone. The winner would receive the prize from the hand of Maid Marian (who of course was Robin's true love) and be proclaimed the best archer in all the land. They hoped that Robin, who was an excellent archer, would come to the contest and they could capture him.Robin did go to the contest, but in disguise. He dyed his hair, changed his beard, and wore a hood. No one recognized him (except for Maid Marian who was in the viewing stand with her father.) The contest progressed, and Robin won every match, and in the final challenge shot his arrow so accurately that it split the arrow of the previous archer down the middle. Robin went toward the viewing stand to receive his prize and be proclaimed the best archer in all the land. But at this point, the Sheriff and his men realized that this fabulous archer must be Robin Hood, and tried to capture him. But the crowd stepped in and blocked the way, letting Robin escape safely back to Sherwood Forest. So everyone knew that Robin Hood was the best archer in all the land.
