On view here is a miniature portrait of a sorrowful mature gentleman. The (written by the artist) inscription encircling the image reads as follows: "fait a la maison d'arret du Luxembourg le 18 ventose An II de la Republique" (English: made in prison du Luxembourg on 18 vendose of the 2nd year of the Republic (this day of the French Revolutionary Calender corresponds with March 8, 1794 - B.W.). Hence, we are dealing here with a miniature portrait of one of the inmates of the most notorious Parisian prison, which was housed in the "Palais du Luxembourg" (see also our image nr.8). This man was portrayed while awaiting the decision of the Revolutionary Tribunal - a verdict most likely meant to send him off to the guillotine. This work is an extremely rare object from the period of the "Grand Terreur" (Great Terror (or Reign of Terror)). It was executed by one of the leading Parisian miniaturists, whom the prison guards (clearly for some sort of compensation) allowed to visit the depicted gentleman.
