Description: Report on the Geology of South Carolina By Michael Tuomey Published A.S. Johnson, Columbia, SC, 1848. FIRST EDITION. Quarto, [iv], iv, [2], 293, lvi p. and errata slip, text illustrations, colored frontispiece and two folding colored geologic maps. An overall Good copy, bound in the original embossed green cloth with a gilt vignette of a palmetto tree and rising sun on the front cover. The covers are detached and edgeworn, with old tape marks near the backstrip. Cover gilt bright. Backstrip badly chipped, lacking the upper third. Binding firm. Save for occasional light foxing to a few leaves, most text pages are fresh, clean and bright. The colored maps are particularly well preserved. The large hand-colored map, “Geological Map of South Carolina, 1845”, unfolds to 18.5 by 21 inches and displays 15 vibrant colors. A bookplate on the front pastedown indicates that this volume was presented to Harvard University by J.D. Whitney; earlier, contemporary signature of “W. Gibbs” (likely Wolcott Gibbs) on the title page, and later bookplates on the front endpapers. The covers/spine condition notwithstanding, this is a nice copy of a scarce treatise. Hazen 10438. BMNH 1978. Marcou 546. Ward and Carozzi 2204. I've done my best to describe the book, but if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to send me an e-mail.
