Description: ANCIENT ROMAN BRONZEFIBULA (BROOCH) A very rare and fine Roman bronze plate brooch depicting a gladiator fight. The scene shows the provocator gladiator on the left. He is identifiable from the large rectangular shield and short dagger he holds. His weight is pushed forward, braced on his left leg as he seemingly triumphs over the retiarius on the right, who has fallen to the ground in defeat. The fallen gladiator raises his right hand up as if to shield himself from the final blow. The pin of this fibula has unfortunately been lost. Dimensions: Weight - 6.94 grams Size - 3x2.5 cm A gladiator was an armed combatant who entertained audiences in the Roman Republic and Roman Empire in violent confrontations with other gladiators, wild animals, and condemned criminals. Some gladiators were volunteers who risked their lives and their legal and social standing by appearing in the arena. Most were despised as slaves, schooled under harsh conditions, socially marginalized, and segregated even in death. Age: 0-100 AD Provenance: Previously in the collection of an American gentleman based in London, formed prior to 2000.
