Description: Up for sale is this rare circa 1948 original oil on canvas painting by Robert William Wood (1889-1979). 1. Stylistic and Subject Matter Analysis: This painting, titled "Cathedral Group Grand Tetons Lake Jennie" by Robert Wood, depicts the scenic Grand Tetons in Wyoming. The Grand Tetons are well-known for their majestic, rugged peaks, and this work captures their natural beauty perfectly. This painting scene depicts an atmospheric Grand Tetons, with Lake Jennie at it's base, looking southwest toward the peaks from the northeast at sunrise, as the clouds are clearing after an evening storm. Regarding the term "Cathedral Group" found on the back of this canvas: the "Cathedral Group" refers to a prominent grouping of peaks in the Teton Range. Specifically, it is comprised of Grand Teton, Mount Owen, and Teewinot Mountain, among others. The name comes from the peaks' resemblance to cathedral spires. In this context, "Cathedral Group" is indeed used to describe the group of mountain peaks that are part of the Grand Tetons. As for the exact year when this particular painting was created, it's not directly specified on the canvas or the other provided information. Robert Wood painted numerous landscapes throughout his career, and many of his works, especially those of famous natural landmarks, such as the Grand Tetons, were created in the mid-20th century, typically between the 1940s and 1960's. 2. Provenance and Authentication: This Robert Wood painting was purchased from Misty's Consignments, in Rancho Mirage, California. The sellers, from which I purchased my Wood's painting from at Misty's in Rancho Mirage, live in San Clemente, California. The couple in San Clemente that bought the Woods painting, had known a lady for many years named Nancy Pretty. She was a long time estate sales coordinator from Fullerton, California. When she died some of her collection ended up with her son, and they bought it from him. He lived in Placentia, California...they believe, but it was owned by her. Nancy Pretty may have purchased my Wood's painting directly from the artist Robert Wood. Jeffrey Morseburg is the leading expert for Robert Wood. Jeffrey's father was close friends with Robert Wood and as a child, Jeffrey knew Robert Wood in his later years and was given a majority of Robert Wood's paintings by an heir of Robert Wood upon the artist's passing in 1979. That said, Jeffrey has stated that my painting is indeed an authentic painting by Robert Wood and was probably painted in the 1948-1958 period, when the majority of his Grand Tetons paintings were produced. There is in original price of $750.00 inscribed in the upper wood stretcher bar, so when the price is adjusted from a 1948 - 1958 period, the price adjustment for today's valuation can be seen in this listing. I now have an authentication certificate by Jeffrey Morseburg and my painting will now be included in the catalogue raisonne for Robert Wood and included with this painting. 4. Condition: There is no paint loss, but some craquelure in some areas of the canvas and it can be easily addressed by a professional art conservator. There is a layer of old, aged varnish and some dirt on the surface of the painting and it will need to be removed, to bring out the original brighter colors, as Robert Wood intended for the canvas scene. Free shipping, full insurance coverage and signature confirmation will be included with the purchase of this Robert Wood painting. Feel free to contact me with any questions you may have on this atmospheric painting of the Grand Tetons, that will highlight any western art collection and thanks for your interest.
