Roman Imperial | Trajan | AR Denarius | 110 AD | DACIA CAPTA | Dacian with FALX

Description: Trajan | AR Denarius Reference: RIC II 99, RSC 121 Date: 110 CE Obverse: IMP TRAIANO AVG GER DAC P M TR P; bust of Trajan, laureate, right Reverse: COS V P P S P Q R OPTIMO PRINC DAC CAP: Dacian captive, standing left, with hands bound in front of him; around him, left and right, various arms including several falx, on ground Mint: Rome Size: 18.8 mm Weight: 2.67 grams DACIAN WARS COMMEMORATIVE. A very nice denarius struck as part of the "DACIA CAPTA" commemorative series to celebrate Trajan's victory over the Dacian kingdom. Also a nice depiction of the notorious Dacian falx, a curved blade weapon popular amoung the trans-Danubian tribes which proved devastating to Roman legionaries. In fact, many military historians attribute widespread armor modifications during the early second century as a response to combat with falx-weilding opponents. These include the transverse, riveted iron crossbars of Imperial Gallic-style helments and an increasing popularity in lorica hamata and lorica squamata. Some minor laminar defects and cleaning scratches. Policies I apply the highest ethical standards in selling ancient coins.
