Description: Crispina | AE25 | Struck under Marcus Sellius (Strategos) Reference: RPC IV.2 307, BMC 499–500 Date: 178-191 CE Obverse: ΚΡΙϹΠΙΝΑ ϹΕΒΑϹΤΗ; draped bust of Crispina, right Reverse:ϹΤΡ Μ ϹΕΛΛΙΟΥ ΟΜΟ ΝΕΙΚΟΜ ϹΜΥΡ; two Nemeses standing, facing each other, each plucking chiton, left one holding bridle, right one holding cubit rule; between, wheel Mint: Smyrna, Ionia Size: 24.8 mm Weight: 10.32 grams A nice, large provincial bronze featuring the unfortunate wife of Commodus, Bruttia Crispina. The reverse of this coin is an abbreviated Greek inscription which translates to "Of the strategos Marcus Sellius, concord of the Nicomedeans and the Smyrnaeans". This coin was thus struck to celebrate the alliance of the two great Anatolian cities. Nemesis (identifiable from her common iconography associations with a bridle and measuring stick) was a particularly important goddess for the city of Smyrna. However, in Smyrna, there were two manifestations of Nemesis, one more akin to Aphrodite and one more akin to Artemis--hence the dual Nemeses on the reverse. The reason for this duality is not known, although it has been suggested that they represent two aspects of the goddess, the kindly and the implacable, or the goddesses of the old city and the new city refounded by Alexander.
