Text description beneath the picture (subject to any spelling errors due to the OCR program used) ROSLIN CHAPEL This was founded in 1446 by William St. Clair, Earl of Orkney, as a collegiate church, but was finished by his son the Earl of Caithness. The transept was never finished, and the chapel is practically only the choir. There are five bays with aisles, the nave being bold and lofty, and the pillars and arches being so profusely ornamented as to present perhaps the most highly decorated specimen of Gothic work in Scotland. The 'Prentice pillar," with its spiral festoon, and the usual legend, is specially noticeable; but the execution of the carving is very unequal in different parts of the Chapel. The St. Clairs lie buried beneath the floor, and there is a legend that up to the time of James VII, they were all buried in complete armour, and that the night before death the Chapel appeared ablaze, as in Scott's ballad of "Rosabelle."
