Description: Here we have a Royal Navy "Ross of London" Officer of the Watch (OOW) telescope which belonged to…… Capt Richard Markham Tyringham Stephens, Order of St. Michael and St. George (CMG) R.N Born 13 November 1875 in Becherham and joined the RN in 1891, Served on HMS Britannia in 1891 and rose to Lt Cdr and Director of Naval Gunnery, CNF (Commonwealth Naval Forces) in 1910. Promoted to Commander, RN (rtd), on 26 June 1914 before joining the Royal Canadian Navy as a Commander in August 1914. On 1 January 1919, he was appointed Assistant Director, Naval Service, Royal Canadian Navy and finally promoted to Captain, RN (rdt) in 1922. (His son, Rear-Admiral R. Stephens, also served in the RCN) The plated telescope is in fine fettle (fresh from the workshop) with the odd minor dink or mark commensurate with its age, all lens are in good clear condition and it measures 17”, extending to 23”. The original leather barrel cover has been replaced with a green baize material with sailor made Turks heads at each end. The eye lens has a sliding protector and the inner barrel is engraved with the owners details and makers name. Eye Aye Capt!
