Description: South Hero is the most populous town that is in both part of Lake Champlain’s largest island of Grand Isle and in Grand Isle County, Vermont. The town of South Hero includes the southern half of South Hero Island (also known as Grand Isle), as well as several islands in Lake Champlain, including Providence Island and Stave Island to the southwest. Early South Hero settlers had to depend upon boats for travel or crossing on the ice when the lake was frozen, or braving the sandbar when water was low, and winds were mile. The sandbar connecting South Hero to the mainland in Milton occurs naturally as a result of the sand flowing down from the green Mountains and out of the mouth of the Lamoille River. As more settlers arrived and they had Produce to sell and materials they needed to buy, it became evident that something needed to be done to make the sandbar more passable. In 1841 the Sandbar Bridge Company was formed and the contract to build was given. The bar was filled with rocks that were hauled by wheelbarrows and two-wheeled dump carts. For the mile and a half through the swamp, a contract was given for a corduroy road of logs. The bridge was completed and open for traffic in 1850. In 1922, the bridge was raised and widened to two lanes. Large square chunks of stone were used for guard rails and in 1930, the surface was paved. In 1933, the Sand Bar State Park was built where the bridge and Whittemore Road meet. This Real Photo Card is not credited and was published in the 1940s when the Dupont stamp box was used. It is a very nice card, with minor wear and a clean, clear image of the “Road near Sand Bar Bridge.” The reverse is also clean. The colors on the images are a more neutral B&W than the scan.Unless otherwise noted, I use Wikipedia, Playle's and Metropostcard for research and try to be as accurate as possible.
