The surface features geometric, butterfly/flower patterns covered in Kaolin (clay). The back has a Thick wooden handle on the inside for gripping. Traditionally these shields were used as defensive weapons and decorative objects. Today these African Shields are a favorite among designers, decorators, and art collectors.
