Description: PLEASE NOTE THAT I PREFER NOT TO SHIP TO HAWAII, PUERTO RICO OR INTERNATIONALLY DUE TO THE RISK OF THE PLANT NOT SURVIVING THE JOURNEY. IF YOU WISH TO COVER THE COST OF EXPEDITED SHIPPING YOU CAN MESSAGE ME PRIOR TO BIDDING OR MAKING THE PURCHASE SO THAT WE CAN DISCUSS EXPEDITED SHIPPING OPTIONS BUT I CAN NOT BE HELD LIABLE FOR LOSSES DUE TO USPS OR OTHER SHIPPING CARRIER SERVICES THAT DO NOT DELIVER ON TIME RESULTING IN THE DEATH OF YOUR SEEDLING(S) I make every effort to ship plants as soon as payment is received. I do not provide hot packs so be mindful of cold temperatures in your area. This evergreen perennial tolerates mild temperatures when it is young preferably no lower than 50 F. For this reason you may need to be present when the post man delivers your package or have someone collect it from your mail box and bring it indoors to warmer temperatures before it gets damaged. Older Sapodillo trees can handle lower temperatures but these are younger immature plants so they do not have that kind of vigor. I ship all of my plants via USPS FIRST CLASS 2 to 3 day delivery or FED EX with tracking that is available upon request but unfortunately, sometimes the postal service/carriers does not deliver on time and packages do sometimes get lost. Please understand, this is something that is out of my control. THE SAPODILLO IS A SLOW GROWING EVERGREEN, SELF POLLINATING, TROPICAL TO SUBTROPICAL FRUITING TREE THAT IS CAPABLE OF REACHING UP TO 100 FEET OR MORE IN HEIGHT. THE BRANCHES ARE STRONG ENOUGH TO BE USED IN CONSTRUCTION AND THEREFORE WIND RESISTANT PARTLY DUE TO DENSE WOOD AND AN EXTENSIVE ROOT SYSTEM. THE BARK OF THE SAPODILLA CONTAINS A WHITE GUMMY SAP THAT IS A NATURAL GUM USED IN THE PRODUCTION OF CHEWING GUM KNOWN IN CENTRAL AMERICA AS CHICLE. THE LEAVES ARE PINK WHEN YOUNG THEN BECOME LIGHT GREEN AND EVENTUALLY A DARK GLOSSY GREEN GIVING THE TREE A VERY ORNAMENTAL APPEARANCE. LEAVES ARE CLUSTERED IN SPIRALS AT THE TIP OF TWIGS THAT ARE FORKED. THE FLOWER BLOOMS ARE VERY SMALL AND BELL SHAPED WITH A CREAM COLORATION. THE VERY PRETTY TINY FLOWERS EVENTUALLY DEVELOP INTO A TINY BROWN FRUIT. THE FRUIT ITSELF IS ACTUALLY A BERRY THAT BECOMES EITHER ROUND OR EGG SHAPED AS THE FRUIT MATURES. DEPENDING ON THE CULTIVAR THE FRUIT CAN WEIGH UP TO 150 GRAMS OR MORE WITH A DIAMETER OF UP TO 3 INCHES DEPENDING ON THE CULTIVAR. THE FRUIT IS USUALLY PICKED WHILE IT IS STILL QUITE HARD. IT IS READY FOR HARVESTING WHEN THE LATEX SAP DOES NOT LEAK FROM THE STEM WHEN THE FRUIT IS PICKED. THE SKIN IS BROWN WITH A ROUGH ALMOST SANDPAPER LIKE EXTERIOR WHICH PROTECTS THE SWEET, SOFT, JUICY YELLOW TO BROWN/RED SUGARY LIKE TEXTURED FRUIT WITHIN. THE FRUIT ITSELF IS DELICIOUS WITH A CONSISTENCY AND TASTE THAT IS SOMEWHAT SIMILAR TO A PEAR BUT MUCH MORE RICH. SOME HAVE DESCRIBED THE FLAVOR AS REMINISCENT OF BROWN SUGAR AND CINNAMON OR CARAMEL WITH OVERTONES OF MALT AND VANILLA DEPENDING ON THE CULTIVAR THAT WAS SAMPLED. IN CENTRAL AMERICA THE FRUIT IS PRIZED BY BOTH THE PEOPLE AS WELL AS RAINFOREST MAMMALS SUCH AS MONKEYS, AND BATS THAT FEED ON THE NECTAR AND CARRY THE FRUIT EVENTUALLY RELEASING THE SEEDS THAT PROPAGATE MORE TREES THROUGHOUT THE FOREST. THE FRUIT IS USUALLY EATEN FRESH OUT OF HAND BUT CAN BE MADE INTO JAMS, ICE CREAM, CUSTARD, OR SHERBET. BOTH FRUIT AND LEAVES ARE USED MEDICINALLY TREATING DIARRHEA, COLDS AND COUGHS. THE WOOD HAS BEEN USED IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF BEAMS IN MAYAN TEMPLES AND HAVE PROVEN TO BE VERY DURABLE AS THEY REMAIN INTACT IN THE MAYAN RUINS EVEN TODAY. SOIL: WILL TOLERATE MOST WELL DRAINING SOIL. SOUR SOP IS SOMEWHAT SALT TOLERANT IF YOU LIVE ALONG COASTAL WATERS. YOUR PLANT WILL FLOURISH BEST IN ORGANIC, RICH, WELL DRAINED, SANDY SOIL WITH A MORE ACID PH 5.0 - 6.5. MULCHING IS VERY BENEFICIAL IF YOU LIVE IN AN AREA WHERE THE WEATHER IS HOT AND DRY. KEEPING YOUR SOIL MOIST OR WET BUT NOT DRENCHED WILL IMPROVE GROWTH. AS YOUR TREE'S ROOT SYSTEM DEVELOPS, WIDEN THE MULCH LAYER UP TO 5 FEET OUTWARD FROM YOUR PLANT'S CANOPY AND REPLACE WITH FRESH MULCH EACH YEARIF YOU INTEND TO GROW YOUR SAPODILLA IN A CONTAINER, IT WOULD BE BEST TO USE A HIGH QUALITY POTTING SOIL THAT IS RICH IN ORGANIC MATTER AS OPPOSED TO USING GARDEN SOIL. A GOOD HOME MADE POTTING MIX WOULD BE AN EQUAL COMBINATION OF ORGANIC COMPOST, PEAT MOSS, SAND, AND PERLITE OR VERMICULITE. WATER: PREFERS REGULAR WATERING WITH JUST ENOUGH TO KEEP THE SOIL MOIST BUT DO NOT ALLOW WATER TO POOL AROUND THE ROOT SYSTEM WHICH MAY ENCOURAGE FUNGUS AND EVENTUAL ROOT ROT WHICH MIGHT KILL YOUR YOUNG TREE. ALTHOUGH DROUGHT TOLERANT, LONG PERIODS OF DRY WEATHER IN THE ABSENCE OF IRRIGATION CAN LEAD TO LEAF DROP. REGULAR IRRIGATION WITH A SPRINKLER SYSTEM MAY SUFFICE. SUNLIGHT: AT LEAST 6 TO 8 HOURS OF SUNLIGHT. SAPODILLA TENDS TO GROW BEST IN PROPORTION TO THE AMOUNT OF SUNLIGHT THAT IS AVAILABLE. UP TO 12 HOURS OF SUNLIGHT WILL MAXIMIZE GROWTH POTENTIAL. ALTHOUGH TOLERANT OF PART SHADE, FRUIT PRODUCTION MAY BE AFFECTED. IF CONTAINER GROWN KEEP YOUR PLANT ON THE SOUTH SIDE OF YOUR HOME. FERTILIZER: SAPODILLA DOES NOT HAVE DEMANDING FERTILIZER REQUIREMENTS AND CAN DO FAIRLY WELL WITHOUT EXPENSIVE FERTILIZERS PROVIDED YOU HAVE DECENT QUALITY SOIL IN YOUR GARDEN. BECAUSE MOST SOILS ARE DEFICIENT IN CERTAIN NUTRIENTS, FERTILIZING WILL ALWAYS HELP TO INCREASE GROWTH AND EVENTUAL CROP PRODUCTION. ONCE NEW LEAF GROWTH IS SEEN YOU MAY BEGIN FERTILIZING EVERY 8 TO 10 WEEKS FOR THE FIRST YEAR OF GROWTH APPLYING 1/4 LB OF A YOUNG TREE FERTILIZER SUCH AS 6-6-6-2 WITH MINOR ELEMENTS. AFTER THE FIRST YEAR YOU MAY INCREASE YOUR APPLICATION TO 1/2 LB OF FERTILIZER AND APPLY FOLIAR SPRAY THAT CONTAIN 2 TO 3 MINOR NUTRIENT ELEMENTS. AFTER REMOVING YOUR SEEDLING FROM THE PLASTIC BAGGIE, DO NOT REMOVE THE PLANT FROM THE BIODEGRADABLE CUP. CHECK TO MAKE SURE THE SOIL IS STILL MOIST. IF NOT, HYDRATE YOUR SEEDLING WITH DISTILLED, SPRING OR REVERSE OSMOSIS WATER. DO NOT USE TAP WATER WHICH CONTAINS CHLORINE WHICH MIGHT DAMAGE YOUR YOUNG SEEDLING TREE. PLANT THE BIODEGRADABLE CUP WITH YOUR PLANT DIRECTLY IN YOUR NURSERY POT OR YOUR GARDEN LOCATION OF CHOICE. ANY GOOD QUALITY WELL DRAINING SOIL WILL ENSURE THAT YOUR PLANT THRIVES. IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS ABOUT GROWING YOUR SEEDLING, PLEASE MESSAGE ME RIGHT AWAY SO I CAN HELP. INSTRUCTIONS: PLEASE PLANT YOUR SAPODILLO SEEDLING AS SOON AS YOU RECEIVE IT. FOR BEST RESULTS, PLANT YOUR YOUNG SEEDLING IN A 3 TO 5 GALLON PLASTIC NURSERY CONTAINER KEEPING IT IS PART SHADE TO PREVENT LEAF BURNS IF YOUR SUNLIGHT IS INTENSE. DO NOT EXPOSE YOUR YOUNG SEEDLING TO FULL SUN UNTIL YOUR TREE IS AT LEAST 3 TO 5 FEET TALL.AND IS READY FOR TRANSPLANT TO YOUR GARDEN LOCATION OF CHOICE. FAILURE TO DO SO MAY RESULT IN LEAF BURNS AND FAILURE TO THRIVE. DO NOT REMOVE YOUR SEEDLING FROM THE BIODEGRADABLE CONTAINER OR YOU WILL RISK SHOCKING OR KILLING YOUR TENDER YOUNG PLANT. THE BIODEGRADABLE CONTAINER WILL BREAK DOWN OVER TIME AS THE ROOT SYSTEM OF YOUR SEEDLING TREE DEVELOPS. ENSURE THAT THE SOIL/ROOT SYSTEM IS STILL MOIST/WET, PRIOR TO PLANTING. IF NOT PLEASE HYDRATE YOUR PLANT WITH DISTILLED, SPRING OR REVERSE OSMOSIS WATER. NEVER USE CHLORINATED WATER ON YOUNG PLANTS, MANY OF THEM DON'T TOLERATE IT WELL. PLEASE UNDERSTAND, I CANNOT BE RESPONSIBLE FOR DAMAGE DUE TO FAILURE TO WATER YOUR PLANT, LEAVING IT IN EXCESSIVELY HIGH HEAT/SUNLIGHT OR LOW/FREEZING TEMPERATURES SO PLEASE REMEMBER THAT THIS IS A TROPICAL FRUIT TREE THAT DOES NOT TOLERATE LOW TEMPERATURES AND I DO NOT PROVIDE COLD PACKS FOR SHIPPING. IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS ABOUT GROWING YOUR TREE, PLEASE MESSAGE ME IMMEDIATELY. I LOVE GARDENING AND I WANT ALL MY BUYERS TO BE SUCCESSFUL WITH THEIR PLANTS SO THEY CAN ENJOY GARDENING AS MUCH AS I DO. BLESSINGS! :) IF YOUR PLANT ARRIVES DAMAGED BEYOND VIABILITY THEN CONTACT ME IMMEDIATELY WITH PICTURES OF YOUR PLANT STILL SECURED IN THE BOX SO THAT I CAN ADDRESS THE ISSUE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. I DO MY BEST TO KEEP ALL MY CUSTOMERS HAPPY SO PLEASE DO NOT LEAVE NEGATIVE FEEDBACK BEFORE ALLOWING ME A CHANCE TO MAKE THE SITUATION RIGHT. HOWEVER, I CANNOT BE RESPONSIBLE FOR DAMAGE DUE TO FAILURE TO WATER YOUR PLANT, LEAVING IT IN EXCESSIVELY HIGH HEAT/SUNLIGHT OR LOW/FREEZING TEMPERATURES.
