Description: Offering this beautiful lidded jar by well-known ceramicist Sasha Makovkin (1928-2003). Makovkin worked with Edith Heath at Heath Ceramics in the 1950’s and studied with Marguerite Wildenhain at Pond Farm in the late 1950’s. A very versatile potter and artist. This is a lovely example. Measures 4 ¾” x 5 ¼” and in perfect condition in every way. Well signed with his usual mark on the bottom. Sasha Makovkin, Alexander I. 1928 Born 2003 Died EDUCATION 1952 BA University of British Columbia 1987 MA Theology New College Berkeley, California APPRENCICESHIPS AND RESIDENCIES 1959 Pond Farm with Marguerite Wildenhain 1988-1989 Artists (with his wife Susan) in Residence at Princeton Seminary, New Jersey PRIMARY WORK EXPERIENCE 1954-1957 Heath Ceramics, Sausalito, California 1966-1970 College of the Redwoods, Mendocino, California BIOGRAPHY Sasha Makovkin typically threw pieces which his wife Susan decorated. His work ranged from functional stoneware forms to sculpture and architectural installations. Makovkin dug the stoneware clay he used for his functional pieces from Mt Tamalpias. Long before it was popular, Makovkin fired his work in a diesel fueled kiln using a mixture of used motor oils. This Sasha Makovkin jar comes from a studio pottery collection that includes Howard Kottler, Frans Wildenhain, Laura Andreson, Betty Feves and many others, all items I have collected in my travels over the years. Recent health issues have compelled me to find new homes for much of this art that has given me so much joy. Some of the most important pieces will be left to AMOCA and other institutions but many others will be listed here in the near future along with other items I am passing along. I am trying to keep prices extremely reasonable in hopes of this work going to people who will cherish and appreciate it and as such will consider reasonable offers. Thank you.
