Description: Hybodus is an extinct shark of the genus Chondrichthyans. First appearing towards the end of the Permian period, and disappearing during the Late Cretaceous, during the Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous periods the hybodonts were especially successful and could be found in shallow seas across the world. For reasons that are not fully understood, the hybodonts became extinct near the end of the Late Cretaceous period. This is a fossilized dorsal fin spine from hybodus that lived during the Cretaceous period approximately 110 million years ago. This shark had 2 dorsal fins, each with a bony spine like this one, that is thought to have served a defense purpose for the shark. This spine measures approximately 4 3/4 inches long, and it was found in Morocco, North Africa. Track Page Views With Auctiva's FREE Counter
