Jean Sibelius grew to maturity at a time of fervent Finnish nationalism, as the country broke away from its earlier Swedish and later Russian overlords. He is considered the national composer of Finland. The core of Sibelius' oeuvre is his set of seven symphonies. In addition to the symphonies, his best-known compositions include "Finlandia", "Valse Triste", the "Karelia Suite" and "The Swan of Tuonela" (one of the four movements of the Lemminkäinen Suite). Other works include pieces inspired by the Kalevala, over 100 songs for voice and piano, incidental music for 13 plays, the opera "Jungfrun i tornet" (The Maiden in the Tower), chamber music, piano music, 21 separate publications of choral music, and Masonic ritual music. Jorma Panula The Finnish conductor Jorma Panula graduated from the Sibelius Academy as a cantor-organist in 1950, aged 20, and as a conductor in 1953. He subsequently served as Professor in Orchestral Conducting at the academy from 1973 to 1993. From 1965 to 1972, he was Principal Conductor of the Helsinki Philharmonic and from 1963 to 1997 he served as artistic director of the Turku Philharmonic Orchestra of Finland and of the Aarhus Symphony of Denmark.
