Controversy quickly developed in 1909 as the new Lincoln cent began releasing to the public. It was only then that it was noticed that the initials of the designer, Victor David Brenner had been prominently added to the coin's reverse. Increasing negative public opinion soon swayed the mint, and they quickly removed the initials (VDB). Just under 28 million were produced that included the initials. Interestingly, only 484,000 of these were struck in the San Francisco Mint.
